About this book
DEV
Surlok's workshop is forbidden territory, but my curiosity gets the best of me. One quick peek can't hurt, right?
Wrong.
The shiny device I pick up hums to life and conjures a vortex. A horned, savage monster reaches through with his sharp claws and pulls me into his alien world.
Now I'm stranded light years from home, completely at the mercy of this gorgeous beast. His dominant gaze and broad, scarred chest are making my stomach flutter...
I have to find my way home -- before I lose my heart in this alien place.
FEBAKUR
She is the one.
The one that will heal me. That will save me. That will complete me.
Kysus burns and my brothers are missing. I have failed my people, but this curvy, human female gives me hope. She offers me a chance to redeem myself.
I must win her over -- before the feral beast inside of me takes over.
FERAL is the fourth book in the steamy Sci-Fi Romance series Warriors of Kaizon, by Luna Hunter. Each book follows a different couple and can be read as a standalone. No cheating, HEA guaranteed!
Prologue
KYSUS
FEBAKUR
The chains dig into my limbs.
Hunger and thirst drive me to the point of madness.
Still, I will never surrender.
The only sensation I haven’t been able to drown out is the sound of wheels rattling over stone. The slab I’m chained to is being wheeled somewhere. Back to the dungeon for more lashes, I assume.
“Open your eyes, worm.”
That raspy voice can only belong to Ibalen De’Riv. His foul breath makes my skin crawl. The tip of his blade pokes my stomach.
“Do I have to give you more scars?!”
I remain silent, eyes closed, shut off from the world. I haven’t uttered a word since Ibalen captured me at the royal shipyard. It doesn’t matter how many times he cuts me or how many lashes I’m given.
My love for my family is stronger than anything Ibalen can do to me.
“Fine, worm. If my sword cannot make you speak, perhaps this will!”
Do your worst, traitor. You won’t get anything from me.
“It’s almost ready, just a few more tweaks needed.”
That... that voice…
It’s Surlok.
My eyes snap open. What I see absolutely floors me. We’re in our throne room. Ibalen De’Riv has taken over our ancestral home.
I frantically scan the room for Surlok, Wranar, Drarsan, but they’re nowhere to be found. Good, that means they might still live.
And yet, I’m sure I heard Surlok…
“Look!” Ibalen roars, as he points to a…
… what am I looking at?! A blue, shimmering circle, like water floating in mid-air… I see shapes, forms, figures… people…
My mouth goes dry.
Surlok.
He’s flanked by several females. Alien females. My blood quickens at the sight of them, activating a response I didn’t know my weakened body still possessed.
One catches my eye in particular. Short dark hair, round cheeks, button nose. For a brief second our eyes meet through the blue, shimmering layer, and my two hearts race as if lightning has struck me.
My strength returns to me in an instant — but then the image fades away, and only the deserted throne room remains.
“This is what your House has been hiding from all the Kaizon,” Ibalen De’Riv thunders, a look of deranged madness on his face. “Females! Fresh females! We’ve raided your labs, we know all about his secret device! Soon, the traitor Surlok will open up a portal back to Kysus, to this very location, and when he does, I will be waiting,” Ibalen snarls. “I will have his head mounted on a spike, and you will watch it all, Febakur. His females will be mine. All of Kysus will see how your family has betrayed us all!”
I ball my fists and slowly test my chains. My strength, renewed by that vision of pure beauty, is already fading away again. I will need all of my power if I am to escape, if I am to save my brother, save the females, save my family.
I need to see her again.
She will be my salvation.
Chapter 1
EARTH
Dev
The sounds of horns clashing wakes me up from my wonderful dream. The memory of brooding eyes fades away into nothingness.
I roll over and try to hide my head underneath my pillow to drown out the noise, but the low grunts of Kaizon warriors pass easily through my walls.
They might as well be breathing right into my ear.
I need earplugs.
The dream evaporates. I’ve forgotten what it was that had me so worked up in the first place. All I know is that I’m tangled up in my sheets, with a racing heart and sweaty palms. Defeated, I get out of bed.
Once the alien warriors start wrestling, they don’t stop until there is a winner. And if you take their stamina into account… I can kiss sleeping in goodbye.
I stumble outside in my pajamas, the bright morning sun blinding me. Kerax and Vuka are going at it right in front of my cabin; their dark gray torso’s glistening with sweat, their strong, muscly arms resting on their opponent’s broad shoulders as they try to throw each other off balance, their strong brows furrowed as they compete for dominance.
If these two colossal beings weren’t mated to my friends, I’d jump between them and really give them something to fight about….
But they are, so I won’t.
All I can do is enjoy the view of two half-naked alien hunks going at it while feeling both guilty and lonely. I push away the illicit thoughts that their muscular, gray bodies conjure.
Will my Kaizon mate ever arrive?
Vuka, Kerax, and now Surlok. It’s starting to get crowded in our little paradise. Jade, Makayla, and Joan have found their soulmates, and even though I’m happy for them, I can’t help but feel a tinge of jealousy whenever I see the couples snuggle.
The aliens scared me at first. They’re menacingly tall, with curling horns, sharp claws, and bodies that ooze raw power. They are bred for fighting… and fucking.
A fact I’m reminded of every night when the sounds of mating drift across our little campsite.
I really need earplugs.
Now that I’ve gotten to know them a bit, I can see what my friends see in them. They’re fiercely protective, incredibly loyal, and quite pleasing to look at, if the horns don’t turn you off.
More of the brothers should be coming, but it’s been quiet around camp lately ever since Surlok arrived. Of course, that was a big change, seeing as four more girls joined our group!
Luckily, they all mesh well with our vibe. I’m especially partial to Eileen because she gets my sense of humor.
I haven’t seen much of Surlok. He’s either with Joan, o
r tinkering in his workshop, that he keeps exceptionally well locked.
I peered inside once, and he freaked out. Surlok was showing Joan something, and I wanted to know what it was. I saw a strange blue light, and I could have sworn I saw someone look at me through that blue haze. Then the light fizzled out, and Surlok turned to me and cursed me in his alien tongue.
Ever since, my dreams have been restless. And he won’t tell me what it was I saw. He just tells me to be patient and leave him alone. It’s infuriating.
Kerax rams his horns against Vuka’s and the sharp clang makes me wince. It’s loud enough to startle Jip, Kerax’s alien hound, who had been sleeping in the shade peacefully.
“Can you two keep it down?!” I yell. “I’m trying to sleep here!”
Kerax throws his head back and laughs. “The sun is up, Dev. The new day is here. A day for celebration!”
“Celebration? What for?”
Kerax shifts his weight, hooks his ankle around Vuka’s left leg, and shoves him hard. The alien warrior goes tumbling down laughing, hitting the earth with a great big thud.
“My victory!” Kerax growls. “And Surlok’s! He’s stabilized the device!”
“The what?”
“You will soon learn, female. The others are assembling at the main cottage. I suggest you join them.”
I slam the door shut and grumble. Today is the one day in the week when I don’t have any chores. As much as I love the girls, I do enjoy spending some alone time as well when I get the chance.
Especially now that Ka’de is here, Jade’s little baby boy. Plus, the other two girls are starting to show…
Every time I see them, I can’t help but feel a pang of loneliness. And that makes me feel guilty, because I ought to be happy for them! And so, I feel even worse. It’s a vicious cycle I haven’t been able to break. The only thing that gives me joy is hiking to the underground caves and collecting gemstones. I’ve amassed quite a collection in the past few months!
If the others knew what I was doing, they’d probably flip. It’s dangerous to go spelunking, especially alone, but I just love the feeling of having to rely on myself. The Kaizons are great — I’ve never been safer — but the rebel in me doesn’t want to be taken care of. I’ve survived for years in this harsh, dangerous world without their help, and I could do it again if I had to.
I don’t want to, of course. But knowing that I could gives me the confidence I need to get through the day.
I open my drawer to find something suitable to wear when my heart skips a beat.
It’s missing.
My pièce de résistance. A huge, sparkling crystal, the most beautiful gemstone I’ve ever seen. It’s without doubt my most prized possession.
Gone.
What the fuck?
It most certainly didn’t grow legs and walk out of my room. I can’t imagine one of the girls going through my stuff, but… someone certainly has.
Ugh.
I will get to the bottom of this. I throw on some fresh clothes and storm out, ready to teach everyone a lesson about respecting privacy.
Ka’de’s joyful screams greet me when I open the door to the main cabin. The young child has got a powerful voice, just like his father.
“Get back here! Ka’de! I’m serious!”
The half-Kaizon child comes running towards me, holding two handfuls of cake which he’s stuffing into his wide-open mouth as fast as he can.
Jade chases him, but even at two years old the child is too fast for her. It’s crazy how powerful Kaizon genes are.
I pirouette to the side and let the child pass. If I hadn’t, he would knock me right over. Every day that little tyke grows bigger and stronger.
Jade stops and pants. Her look is one of desperation mixed with laughter. “Children,” she says. “Oh my stars. I asked Vuka if this is normal, but he claims Ka’de is a quiet child. Quiet! Can you imagine?!”
“I could, yeah,” I chuckle. “Good luck with that.”
“Thank you. I need it. I need a lot of it.”
All of the women, save for Jade, have gathered around the table.
“Morning Dev,” Makayla says. “We already started breakfast, seeing as we didn’t know when you’d be up. Are you going to join us?”
I sit down next to her, and Eileen hands me a cup of tea. I accept and let the drink wake me up before I clear my throat.
“Has anyone seen my gemstone?” I ask. “It’s big, blue, size of Ka’de’s fist. Can’t miss it. Except it is. Missing, that it. It was in my drawer, and now it’s gone. Has anyone seen it?”
Blank stares all around.
“Figures,” I sigh. “Where’s Surlok, anyway?”
“He’s in his workshop,” Joan says. “Maybe he has seen your stone?”
“I’ll go and ask him right now,” I grumble. As long as it’s gone, I don’t feel much like eating. It’s only a short walk, and the door to Surlok’s workshop is unlocked.
“Hey, Surlok? Surlok?”
The room is empty, and I stop dead in my tracks. Finally, I can find out what he’s been working on. I glance over my shoulder, but no one’s around. Vuka and Kerax aren’t paying me a lick of attention, and everyone else is at the house.
I’ll take a single peek.
I’ve earned it.
I push my harping conscience and its insistence on respecting privacy away. This is different. Besides, someone went through my things. If I do this, I’m even.
That’s how I try to justify it to myself as I hold my breath and sneak inside.
And it’s the first thing I see.
My bloody gemstone!
It’s perched in the middle of a metal disk, the same one I’ve seen him tinker with in the past. I can’t believe Surlok rummaged through my belongings. How dare he?!
Furious, I storm into the room and grab the device. Instantly it starts humming, and then rattling, and then shaking, and then a blue sphere appears. Just like before.
Suddenly a figure steps forth.
Right out of the blue sphere into the workshop.
My heart stops, and I don’t even dare to breathe as I look at the imposing figure in front of me. The alien male grins at me menacingly, baring his sharp fangs.
Oh shit.
Chapter 2
KYSUS
FEBAKUR
There it is.
Out of nowhere, the blue shimmering portal springs into existence, accompanied by a low hum. Adrenaline pumps through my veins as my body prepares itself for the upcoming fight.
I’ve been waiting for this moment for days. I am weak, thirsty, and hungry, but that can’t stop me. Nothing can stop me from protecting my family.
Ibalen De’Riv perks up, a wicked grin appearing on his sunken face as the portal stabilizes. “Finally,” he growls. “I was starting to grow bored, Febakur! I was starting to think that brother of yours wasn’t such a genius after all, that he couldn’t figure it out. It seems he has. How fortunate. For me.”
He unsheathes a large, decorative blade and cracks his neck. “I will give Surlok a clean death, for opening the path,” Ibalen chuckles. “Don’t worry, Febakur. I will pull him into this world, so you can see the life leave his eyes yourself.”
I slowly test my chains. I don’t possess the strength to break them now, but that alien female — she gives me strength.
It must be her.
Although the love for my brothers runs deep, it doesn’t empower me in the same way that the goddess does. We shared one brief moment of eye-contact, but in that moment, I felt more alive than in all my years before.
Vukaror was right — human females are our future. One glimpse has proven that a thousand times over.
And so, it must be her on the other side. Or else Surlok will most surely perish. He is a genius and a capable warrior, but Ibalen is in a league of his own. Only Vukaror and Kerax could match his raw strength… and he’s got something none of my brothers possess.
A complete lack of honor.
That is how he ‘won’ the battle at the royal shipyard, how he captured me. His troops, seemingly loyal to my family, marched in and attacked us in the most treacherous way possible, striking from behind, completely unprovoked.
It’s completely unforgivable.
Slowly but surely, the alluring shape of a female becomes visible through the shimmering portal.
“Hm, this is not your brother,” Ibalen muses as he runs his finger across his blade. “Shame, I was looking forward to spilling his blood here on the ground of your ancestral home… but no matter. I will take this female and show everyone what your family has been hiding from us! The Kaizon will curse your name… but first I will have my way with her. Yes, my quad pulses at the mere sight of this creature. Look at how wide her hips are — perfect for breeding. You are missing out, Febakur,” he chuckles. “If you’re good, I might just let you watch.”
The traitorous bastard steps through the gate, as easy as diving into a pool, and he returns only moments later with the alien female clutched in his grasp. She struggles and fights for her life, her face red and puffy as she kicks and screams.
My breath falters the moment our eyes meet.
It is her.
The one from my vision.
The one that has kept my two hearts beating. That has kept me sane throughout all the torture.
She is even more beautiful than in my dreams.
Ibalen wraps his dirty claws tightly around her frame. He leans down and smells her hair, his forked tongue grazing her ear. His fangs drip with saliva, a look of pure hunger taking hold of him.
She’s mine, you bastard.
Pure rage, stronger than anything I’ve ever felt before, fills every inch of me. My two hearts race, and adrenaline courses through every vein in my body. I feared my strength had left me after all this time spent in chains.
